Masada

Masada est arx ab Herode Magno in ripa occidentali Asphaltitis lacus diligenter et magnis expensis munita et cisternis aquarum omniumque rerum necessariarum copia instructa tum cum rex timebat ne Marcus Antonius, ipso de medio sublato, regnum suum Cleopatrae instanter roganti donaret. Hanc rupem abruptam sibi elegit quo confugere et diuturnam obsidionem tolerare posset. Itaque magnificam regiam a septentrionali castelli latere adiunxit in qua ipse habitaret; cuius parietes picturis, sola vero tesselato opere ornavit.

Post centum annos Masada supremum refugium Iudaeorum a Romanis desciscentium fuit: haec enim anno 73 a legato Lucio Silva capta ultimum finem primo bello Iudaico imposuit.

It's a rather big place, so set aside at least a few hours if you want to see everything. The descending from on foot takes about 45 mins, the terrain is not so difficult and a big experience.

Did you know that Masada was built on top of a flat rock plateau at the western end of the Judean Desert? Masada means “fortress” and it is approximately 1800 x 900 feet in size. Our passengers love!
